Welcome To The
Vacation Haven Of Pawleys Island
Georgetown County stretches from the wild expanses of the Santee River delta on the Charleston County border, northward along the coast to Horry County and Myrtle Beach, the area known as the Grand Strand. The county is home to the vacation haven of Pawleys Island.
Pawleys Island is a relaxed beach resort community on US 17, about halfway between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, 70 miles northeast of Charleston.

The families of rice planters who owned plantations on nearby rivers first settled Pawleys Island in the early 1700s. The planters knew it was unhealthy for their families to remain on the rivers during the summer, and that the seashore was much healthier. Even though they didn't know about malaria in the 1700s, they knew enough to get away! They moved their families, horses, cows, bedding, provisions, and furniture to Pawleys in May of each year, where they remained until the first frost in November. From this leisurely existence developed the charm of Pawleys that still remains.

Pawleys Island has a mild climate reaching an average high of 90 degrees in July and an average low of 38 degrees in January. Precipitation averages 5 inches monthly. Snowfall very minimally occurs in winter.
Pawleys Island's public school system contains one elementary school, one middle school and one high school. All are nationally accredited. There are also five private schools. For secondary education, Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College are both within 40 miles.
Georgetown Memorial Hospital serves the area from only 15 miles away. Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and Conway Hospital are also within 30 miles.
The quality of golf in Georgetown County is unsurpassed. Five public golf clubs sit in Pawleys Island alone. Of course, if your golf game isn't quite up to par, Tradition Golf School lets you learn from real PGA Pros in 2, 3 or 5-day classes. Tennis courts, public & private, are dotted across the county. A bike trail was also recently added that skirts along the edge of the Waccamaw Neck. Wonderful little shops and the king of culinary attractions, the many seafood restaurants, offer a wealth of enjoyable experiences. For generations, the quaint stores and boutiques around Pawleys Island have lured vacationers off the beaches onto the mainland. But if you still prefer the beach, there are plenty of opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, fishing and even crabbing.
Today, more and more visitors who have discovered the peaceful pace and quiet dignity of Pawleys Island are returning to stay. Some of the most intriguing neighborhoods, single homes and homesites can be found just off the beaten path throughout the county.
